Mitch McConnell

As we mentioned before, Mitch McConnell sounded the alarm on Trump earlier this week. But he’s not relenting.

Trump and MAGA were undoubtedly grown in the legacy GOP’s petri dish. But now that contagion is out of the lab and running amok. Like Dr. Frankenstein, now that he realizes his creation is terrorizing the villagers, Mitch McConnell is assembling a mob with pitchforks. Mitch, along with so many others, gave life to this monster. Now he believes he can taketh away.

McConnell’s message seems very careful and specific, addressing RFK Jr.’s intents to end polio vaccinations:

“For decades, I have been proud to work with devoted advocates — from Rotary International to the Gates Foundation — and use my platform in public life to champion the pursuit of cures for further generations. I have never flinched from confronting specious disinformation that threatens the advance of lifesaving medical progress, and I will not today.

The polio vaccine has saved millions of lives and held out the promise of eradicating a terrible disease. Efforts to undermine public confidence in proven cures are not just uninformed — they’re dangerous. Anyone seeking the Senate’s consent to serve in the incoming Administration would do well to steer clear of even the appearance of association with such efforts.”

The implicit message to Donald Trump, however, is that he can’t expect to have his cabinet appointees rubber-stamped, no less recess appointments. And that the majorities in the Senate are slim enough, that McConnell could signal to other Republican Senators to vote against his nominees.

However, we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
